Too Good for Drugs & Violence — High School is a comprehensive prevention education program for grades 9-12 designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to remain safe and drug free. This program combines components of Too Good for Violence (K–8) and Too Good for Drugs (K–8) in an innovative approach that allows high school students and schools to meet both prevention and academic needs. This program promotes bonding, develops life skills, and establishes positive, violence and drug- free norms.

Too Good for Drugs and Violence—High School is designed to teach all students that they are too good for drugs and violence, and to equip them with the knowledge, skills and attitudes they need to remain safe and drug-free. How is the Too Good for Drugs & Violence - High School curriculum organized?

The Too Good for Drugs and Violence—High School kit includes 3 curricula.

1. Too Good for Drugs and Violence—High School Core Curriculum for students includes fourteen, 60-minute lessons. Components include: Goal Setting, Decision Making, Respect for Self and Others, Assertiveness, Communication, Conflict Resolution, Managing Emotions, Bonding and Relationships, Tobacco, Alcohol, Marijuana, Addiction, Maximizing Life, Minimizing Stress, Staying Safe and Drug Free.

2. Too Good for Drugs and Violence—High School Infusion Lessons feature 12 lessons that incorporate prevention into standard subject areas such as English, Health/Science, and Social Studies. This exciting cross curricular teaching method reinforces and expands on the information and skills taught in the Core Curriculum.

3. Too Good for Drugs and Violence -- Staff Development is a 10-lesson, motivational and highly interactive curriculum for educators that illustrates how to integrate the best in prevention practices with the latest educational strategies. TGFD&V-Staff Development creates a classroom climate which reduces risk factors, builds protective factors and supports resiliency. The sessions are as follows: Welcome and Introduction: Risk, Protection and Resiliency, Bonding, Meaningful Participation, Caring and Support, High Expectations, Skills for Communication, Skills for Handling Anger and Conflict, Skills for Decision Making, Norms, Creating a Healthy School Climate.

How do I know Too Good for Drugs & Violence - High School is effective?
Each year for the past 20 years, independent evaluation has proven the Mendez programs successful in the public schools in Tampa, Florida. We provide a pre- and post-surveys to enable teachers to measure students’ change in attitudes, skills and beliefs. The survey consists of questions linked to program objectives. Too Good for Drugs (K-12) has also been recognized as a Model Program by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. It has been proven to reduce students’ intentions to: smoke cigarettes by 46%, drink alcohol by 51%, smoke marijuana by 44%, and engage in aggressive behavior by 46%. How can I implement Too Good for Drugs & Violence - High School effectively?
For successful implementation, Too Good for Drugs & Violence High School requires skilled, committed, enthusiastic teachers who personally exhibit the attributes encouraged by the program. Teachers should deliver the following:

• Core Curriculum, designed to be taught one lesson per week for 14 weeks (in freshman/sophomore health/science classes) or twice a week, if needed.

• 12 Infusion Lessons, designed to be taught within standard subject areas such as English, Health/Science and Social Studies.

• The Too Good for Drugs & Violence Staff Development is delivered to the faculty in ten sessions.

Do I need curriculum training?
To implement our Too Good Programs in your school district in the most effective and efficient manner, we recommend a training program led by the certified teachers and training professionals who developed the curriculum. Our trainings are affordable, informative, and motivating. They may also enhance the fidelity of implementation by providing your instructors with a common knowledge base and skill set. However, a Mendez Foundation training is not a pre-requisite to successful program implementation. Our carefully scripted curricula kits are easy to use and include all of the materials you will need to share the program with your students. We are also happy to answer any questions you may have as you proceed with program implementation.

Do you offer a K-8 drug and violence prevention curriculum?
In grades K-8, our drug and violence prevention curriculum is offered as two separate programs: Too Good for Drugs (K-8) and Too Good for Violence (K-8). These programs feature a separate, developmentally appropriate curriculum for each grade level. Each curriculum builds on earlier grade levels, an instructional design which enables students to learn important skills sequentially and retain them year after year.
